Bauhinia purpurea, often called the orchid tree or purple bauhinia, is a small to medium-sized flowering tree native to the Indian subcontinent and Myanmar. It is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions for its ornamental beauty. The tree is known for its distinctive bilobed leaves, which resemble a butterfly or camel’s foot, and for its large, fragrant pink to purple flowers. It generally grows to around 5 meters or more and produces long seed pods after flowering. Besides its value as an ornamental and shade tree, some parts of the plant are eaten or used in traditional remedies in parts of Asia. Its striking flowers make it a favorite in gardens, roadsides, and parks.
