A tough, wide-crowned tree that establishes on ground where little else will — saline, compacted, poor and dry. Not the most refined tree in the catalogue, and specified for exactly that reason: it survives conditions that kill better-looking species.

Landscape use
Reclamation and difficult-site planting, coastal shelterbelts, perimeter and boundary screening, and shade on land with poor or saline soil. A workhorse rather than a feature tree.
Grown on with a clear stem it works well beside circulation, and the thorns suit it to boundary and security planting. It establishes very readily, which is what makes it dependable on reclaimed and difficult ground — worth confirming your destination’s planting guidance for volume schemes.
