Samanea saman

Rain tree, monkeypod · Fabaceae · Semi-deciduous canopy tree

The largest shade tree in the catalogue, and the one specified when a single tree has to cover a great deal of ground. An enormous flat umbrella crown, often twice as wide as the tree is tall, with foliage that folds at dusk and before rain.

Landscape use

Parks, campuses, resort grounds, car parks and open civic space. One mature specimen shades an area no group of smaller trees will match, which makes it efficient where the ground is available.

The spread is the whole point. Allow the crown its full width from buildings, services and boundaries, and give the roots open ground to run — sited that way, a single tree does the work of a small grove.

Site tolerance

DroughtHigh once established
SalinityModerate [to confirm]
WindModerate — the wide crown catches wind and limbs can fail
SoilWide range with drainage; needs depth and root run for the crown it carries

Export notes

Supplied root-balled and wrapped. Large stock in this species carries a heavy ball and a wide reduced crown, which affects how many fit a container — confirmed against the final order. Phytosanitary certification accompanies every shipment. See export and compliance.
