Indian jujube, ber · Rhamnaceae · Evergreen to semi-deciduous tree

A tough, spreading fruiting tree of the dry tropics, widely grown from India across the Arabian Peninsula and into Africa. Larger and faster than Ziziphus jujuba, more heat-driven than Ziziphus spina-christi, and familiar to almost every buyer in the region by its local name.

Landscape use

Shelter belts, boundary and buffer planting, dry-country parks, and productive or heritage landscapes where a familiar regional tree is wanted. It gives dense shade quickly on ground where little else will establish.

The branches carry thorns, so it performs best away from paths and play areas, in the middle of a planted mass rather than at its edge. Where the same hardiness is wanted in a cleaner, more formal tree, Ziziphus spina-christi is the companion species.
